Six pull requests landed in one afternoon, all green. His message read: "This is incredible. Also I'm terrified."
Here's an unpopular take from someone who has shipped enterprise software for 25 years. The agentic SDLC, the one PwC, IBM, and Deloitte are all calling the defining motion of 2026, is real. It works. It's also about to amplify every requirements problem your company has been quietly tolerating since the day you opened. Not fix. Amplify.
Three numbers, then I'll get out of the stat-loaded part. According to PwC's 2026 "Agentic SDLC in practice" report, 70% of software teams now use generative AI at moderate to high levels across the lifecycle, with Pioneer teams shipping roughly 74 releases per year. Failed digital transformations now cost the global economy about $2.3 trillion every year. And in 2026, roughly 70% of transformation initiatives still fail to meet their objectives. We're about to pour autonomous agents on top of the second number while celebrating the first. I don't love how that sounds either.
What does PwC mean by an agentic SDLC?
An agentic SDLC means autonomous AI agents handling multiple stages of software delivery (planning, design, code, test, deploy, ops) with minimal human intervention at each handoff. Short version. PwC's framing splits teams into Pioneers (GenAI in six or more stages), Adopters, and Observers (GenAI in zero or one stage). The Pioneers, per the same report, are the ones already hitting that 74-releases-a-year cadence, and they're being held up as the benchmark every CTO is now being asked to chase.
IBM is shipping the most visible enterprise example. At Think 2026, the company announced that more than 80,000 of its own employees (over a quarter of the workforce) now use an internal agent called Bob, with a reported 45% average productivity gain on Software Development Life Cycle tasks. Bob writes code, executes tests, opens pull requests, talks to other Bobs. Deloitte's annual TMT predictions add the demand-side number: 25% of enterprises using generative AI are expected to deploy agents in 2025, growing to 50% by 2027. So this isn't a hypothetical. It's a wave.
Here's the part the slide decks skip. Every one of those agents downstream of "Stage 1: Requirements" is executing whatever a human (or another agent) put into the spec. That handoff has been broken since the first time a Business Analyst sat across from a Solutions Architect in 1998 and watched the room produce three different mental models of the same feature. Agentic delivery doesn't fix that. It just runs faster downstream of it.
Why won't faster PRD generation save your agentic SDLC?
This is where I expect some disagreement, including from people I respect. Tools like Eltegra.ai are pitching a clean answer: cut Product Requirements Document creation time by 75%, generate full PRDs from a conversation, then feed those PRDs into the agentic pipeline. I'll grant Eltegra one thing right up front: their compliance-mapping work (HIPAA, ISO 26262, the lot) is genuinely useful, especially for teams without in-house regulatory expertise. So this isn't me dunking on a competitor.
It's me arguing that they're solving the wrong bottleneck. The slow part of requirements has never been the typing. Anyone who has watched a Senior Business Analyst draft a spec knows the document gets typed in maybe four hours, after twelve weeks of conversations, three meetings that ended badly, two stakeholders disagreeing on what "real-time" means, and one product owner who quietly assumed the system would integrate with a legacy ERP that nobody told the architects about. Twelve weeks. Four hours. The bottleneck was discovery, not documentation.
Generating a polished PRD in 30 minutes from a 90-second voice memo doesn't compress those twelve weeks. It hides them. The PRD looks complete because the language model is incredibly good at making things look complete. Headings, acceptance criteria, edge cases, compliance flags, all neatly arranged. The hidden assumptions are still hidden. Now they're hidden inside a document that everyone in the room nods at because it's clean, structured, and confident. Then an agentic pipeline picks it up and ships it. At 74 releases a year. Across multiple parallel features. Without ever asking the question the original architect would have asked over coffee: "Wait, what do you actually mean by real-time?"
I said earlier this was contrarian. Honestly, the more I write it out, the more it just sounds obvious. Faster output downstream of an unsolved problem multiplies the problem. That's true in manufacturing, true in compilers, true in journalism, true here. The PRD-acceleration pitch is the wrong end of the telescope.
How is ambiguity at scale different from old-school ambiguity?
The old SDLC had a built-in safety valve. It was the developer reading the spec. When a human dev hit a vague requirement, they did what humans do: they paused, opened Slack, and asked the Product Manager what the spec actually meant. That micro-friction (annoying, slow, expensive) was a filter. It caught probably 40% of bad assumptions before they became bad code.
Agents don't pause. That's the whole pitch. They just ship.
What does AtlantiCare's success actually prove?
I want to take a real-world agentic AI success seriously, because the optimist case isn't fiction. AtlantiCare, a New Jersey health system, deployed Oracle Health's Clinical AI Agent for ambient note generation. In Oracle's published case data, 80% of the providers who tested the tool adopted it. Documentation time dropped 41%, saving roughly 66 minutes per provider per day. Those are not vendor-marketing numbers. They are measured outcomes from a hospital network that desperately needs less paperwork.
Read those AtlantiCare numbers carefully. The provider walks into a room. A patient describes a symptom. The agent transcribes the conversation and produces a SOAP note: Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan. That four-letter acronym has been the structural backbone of clinical documentation since Dr. Lawrence Weed standardized it in the 1960s. Sixty years of convention. Decades of training data. A clear, well-bounded input format that every clinician in North America already knows.
In other words: the requirements were already solved. The agent didn't have to figure out what "good documentation" meant. The medical profession answered that question in 1968 and the answer hasn't drifted much since. Oracle's agent is doing brilliant work, but it's doing brilliant work on a problem with an unusually clean upstream.
Software requirements almost never start that way. Ask three product owners what "good onboarding" means and you'll get five answers, two of which contradict the other three. There's no SOAP equivalent for "the system should be intuitive." That's the gap the optimist case quietly assumes away.
So when someone points at AtlantiCare and says "agentic AI works at scale," I agree. With a caveat. It works at scale when the upstream is structured. Pour the same agentic energy into a typical enterprise feature request ("we want a customer portal that's modern and self-service") and you'll get a portal. Maybe several portals. None of them will be what anyone actually wanted, because the original brief was a Rorschach test, not a specification.
What should teams do in 2026 if the agentic SDLC is real?
I'm not anti-agent. Let me be clear about that before someone screenshots a sentence out of context. Specira itself uses AI heavily, and I think the agentic shift is one of the most important architectural changes of my career. But the deployment sequence matters, and right now most teams have it backwards.
Three things, in this order:
1. Audit your requirements discovery process before you adopt anything. This is the part nobody puts on the Gantt chart. Spend two weeks watching how your team actually moves from "we want a thing" to "the dev is coding the thing." Where do assumptions sneak in? Who's the bottleneck-shaped person who answers all the disambiguation questions? When that person is on vacation, what breaks? Map it. Write it down. Show it to your CFO. Most teams discover the discovery process is held together by one or two senior people and roughly six hundred unwritten conventions.
2. Decide which decisions agents cannot make. Not "should not." Cannot. There's a difference. Pricing trade-offs, security boundaries, regulatory interpretation, customer-facing contractual language: these belong to humans, full stop. Write the list. Defend it when someone tries to delete an item next quarter, because someone will. Once the boundary is real, the rest of the pipeline can run agentically without anyone losing sleep.
3. Then deploy agents downstream of those decision points. This is the part I'm genuinely excited about. An agent stack that starts with structured, validated, human-anchored requirements is a structural advantage. A Pioneer team in PwC's framework, but with the upstream actually solved. Most companies adopting agentic SDLC in 2026 are doing step three without doing one and two. The ones who reverse that order will quietly eat the rest of the market over the next three years.
The real agentic SDLC opportunity
The story analysts are telling about 2026 is "agents are the new bottleneck-breaker." The story your operations team is going to tell in 2027 depends on whether you fixed Stage 1 before you accelerated Stages 2 through 6. Same agentic tooling. Wildly different outcomes.
